What is Bohemia Crystal?
Bohemia Crystal is a representative of the Czech tradition in the production of exquisite crystal. This tradition began in the 18th century, when Czech craftsmen created something special. They made crystal that shined brightly, looked like a precious stone and became famous throughout Europe. Rich people and royalty wanted it for their palaces, and part of the design of the rooms was entrusted to traditional crystal chandeliers.
It all started in the region of Bohemia, part of what is now the Czech Republic. People had been making glass there for a long time, but in the 17th and 18th centuries they added special ingredients. The result was a pure and heavy crystal with a high lead content – at least 24%. It refracted light in an incredible way, creating thousands of sparks and colorful reflections. That’s why it’s still called “Bohemian crystal”.
The craftsmen work by hand. They cut the glass with diamond tools, polish it carefully, so that each pendant and every detail is unique. This craftsmanship is passed down from generation to generation. Today, Bohemia Crystal continues to follow this approach. What is the concept of “traditional chandeliers”
Traditional chandeliers are the classic choice for those who love luxury and elegance. They bring the spirit of old palaces and mansions, because their main characteristic is the rich ornamentation. Each part is decorated with details – carved elements, curved arms and intricate shapes. That is why the dining room illuminated by a traditional chandelier is filled with an aristocratic atmosphere.
The most impressive are the cascades of crystal pendants, resembling waterfalls. In them, the crystal is hand-polished. Our traditional lighting chandeliers are made of lead crystal. Lead crystal is a special type of glass that is made by adding lead oxide, the substance that makes it heavy and shiny. Bohemia Crystal contains 30% lead, which is why it looks like a real diamond. Unlike ordinary glass, lead crystal is purer and brighter, and people have loved it for centuries for its beauty.
Lead changes the way light passes through the crystal, increasing its refractive index. Ordinary glass has an index of about 1.5, but with lead it reaches 1.7 or 1.8. The result is greater dispersion, which shows the separation of white light into colors, as in a rainbow or prism.
That’s why the lead crystal in a traditional chandelier for living room creates sparkles and colorful reflections – the light is scattered into a spectrum – red, orange, yellow and blue. This makes it shine brighter and look more alive.
