Bohemian Crystal – National Pride of the Czech Republic
Bohemian crystal is a national treasure and one of the emblems of the Czech Republic. It is impeccably transparent and of unparalleled quality. The tradition of glassmaking in the Czech Republic has never been interrupted, which has given it the right to set the tone for the art of glass processing throughout the world.
Both in ancient times and today, Czech glass is processed with diamond tools to create a play of light, which is achieved with the help of additives of copper, manganese, iron and decoration of silver, gold and precious stones.
The land where the Czech Republic is located today was once called Bohemia. Archaeologists claim that glassblowing appeared in these lands as early as the 9th century. At that time, there were very few glassblowers and glass cutters, and therefore only the rich and noble owned crystal glass and glassware.
In the 12th century, however, the active development of the Bohemian glass industry began, and by the 14th century, every citizen could afford exquisite glassware. Natural crystal is a rare mineral, in the processing of which the ancient Greeks and Romans were masters. The Czechs managed to create artificial crystal from Bohemia (crystal by bohemia), adding barium and lead to glass.
The jeweler of Emperor Rudolf II, the Czech Caspar Lehmann, adapted to glass the technique of gem engraving with copper and bronze wheels – and made Czech glass famous throughout the world. Lehmann’s uniquely fine engraving made the glass look like a diamond, captivating connoisseurs of fine art for many centuries. The beauty of Czech glassware, the wide range of colors and high quality surpassed Venetian glass in popularity, and then English glass.
Czech glass has always been renowned for its exceptional transparency: it is a fact that the sands of Bohemia contain a minimal amount of ferric oxide. However, it would be wrong to attribute the success of Czech glassmaking solely to the large quantity of first-class raw materials.
Many glassmiths lived in the Czech Republic. The secret of glass-melting was passed down from fathers to sons. It was the Czech glass making houses that developed the technology of glassmaking and spread it throughout Europe. Interestingly, the Austrian brand Swarovski was created by the ancestral glassblower Daniel Swarovski, who was born in Bohemia.
The Czech Republic has a centuries-old tradition of producing crystal and smooth glass, which can be engraved, polished or colored. Many operations are still performed manually. The unique Bohemian glass is becoming an accent in the design of lighting fixtures of the world’s best manufacturers.
Chandeliers for royalty
The first chandelier made of Czech Bohemian crystal was created in 1724 by master Josef Malmö. Such lamps were made for royal apartments, including the residences of Maria Theresa, Queen Elizabeth and Louis XIV. Crystal chandeliers are still a must-have in the palace halls of the Czech Republic: Bohemian glass can last for centuries, becoming more and more attractive over time.
Today, lamps made of Czech crystal are available to everyone. Bohemia Crystal products demonstrate a brilliant combination of modern ideas and ancient techniques. Even the company Schonbek, a leading producer in the design and manufacture of crystal chandeliers, owes its existence to the secrets of the Czech glassblower Adolf Schonbek.
A lamp made of Bohemian crystal glass will always attract attention. The light in it seems to explode into millions of small “arcs” – it sparkles and gives a luxurious shine to the entire space. However, few people know that the delightful play of light in a chandelier depends on the amount of lead oxide in the crystal.
Proof of authenticity
- Bohemian crystal is not just a beautiful decoration, nor is it just a sign of the good taste of its owner. It is above all a wise investment in a superior product, the work of centuries-old traditions. That is why it is important to buy only original Bohemian glassware, knowing the signs of authenticity:
- The crystal details of the product should be transparent, without bubbles, scratches, streaks or other defects. They should emit an iridescent glow. If you see only a plain glow, you have an ordinary glass product in front of you;
- Authentic crystal “sings” magically. Rub the crystal medallion with a wet finger or tap it lightly with your fingernail and it will give you a melodious, continuous ringing. Glass will only make a dry clicking sound;
- Hold the crystal glass product in your hand: real crystal stays cool for a very long time, while glass heats up quickly.
Never buy crystal from markets or stores with a dubious reputation. It is always wiser to buy Bohemian crystal glassware from original branded stores, where qualified sellers guarantee the quality of the goods. Our online store is the perfect place to buy a crystal chandelier or a set of exquisite glasses with free international shipping for customers from all over the world.
How is Bohemian crystal different?
The meaning of the word “crystal” varies from country to country. In the Western world, however, crystal is most often called lead glass. We speak of Czech crystal when we say that it is glass produced in the traditional Bohemian region with a lead content of at least 24%.
There’s a reason we use lead in our Bohemian glass products – they look absolutely stunning! Bohemian crystal is known for its brilliance, and it’s achieved thanks to the high amount of lead. Lead gives the glass a high refractive index, which in turn increases its ability to separate light into all its colors. The more cuts that are created in the glass, the more brilliance and light is reflected through the crystal object.
We use 24% lead crystal for components such as chandelier cups and 30% Bohemian lead crystal for other chandelier
crystal parts. We pride ourselves on our uncompromising policy on material quality and this is something our customers appreciate after 20 or even 30 years when they find that our products have still not lost their sparkling beauty.
Production processes
The creation of luxury Bohemian glass products is a complex process, taking place in several precisely followed stages. The meticulous following of ancient technologies is what makes our production authentic and so sought after all over the world. Perhaps you are curious how the magic happens? Well, let us tell you:
First stage: production of the glass matter: About 70% of the raw material is quartz sand, to which limestone, potash (potassium carbonate) and lead oxide are added, as well as colorants. The mixture is placed in a furnace, where it melts at a temperature of over 1000 °C in a melting bath, forming a viscous mass of a certain color. Copper oxide colors the mass green, manganese oxide – purple, cadmium – red, and cobalt – blue.
Forming the basis: The glassblower collects the required amount of molten mass at the end of the tube, winding it in several layers. Rotating the tube evenly, the master begins to blow the ball. Having brought the blank to the desired size, he places it in a wooden mold – a kind of box made of two halves with symmetrically carved recesses with the required parameters.
For each model, a wooden mold is made of beech or oak. To prevent the wood from igniting upon contact with the hot glass mass, the molds are pre-soaked in water for several hours, then periodically watered during the process. After placing the blank in the mold and continuing to rotate the tube, the craftsman blows out the product, then takes it out to evaluate the result. If necessary, the procedure is repeated several times until the blank takes on the desired form.
Adding the inner layer: A clear glass blank is placed inside the prepared colored base and blown, forming the second layer of the product. By this time, the molten Czech glass has cooled to 800 °C. The product is dipped back into the furnace so that the two layers fuse, and then it is finished in the same wooden mold.
Connecting the bowl and the stem: The stems of the cups and bowls are cast separately, a distinctive feature of Bohemian glassworks. The master holds the tube with the stem, while the apprentice holds the bowl. To press the stem exactly into the center of the cup, the workers rotate the tubes evenly in opposite directions. After connecting the parts, the glassblower separates the hot and flexible product from the tubes with a special knife.
Product cooling: The crystal product is fed via a conveyor belt into a special furnace, which is a long “corridor” where the temperature gradually decreases: from 450 °C at the entrance to 50 °C at the exit. Smaller products are cooled within five hours, while larger ones require about seven.
Edge sanding: The edges of the cooled crystal product are polished on an abrasive disc. The crystal is watered continuously so that the contact with the disc is not too rough. The edges of the product are then melted further slightly using a gas burner.
Applying a grid: Each series of items is supplied with a sketch of the model, developed by the factory’s designers. In accordance with the elements and proportions of the ornament, the product is marked with thin vertical and horizontal lines. The master does this manually with a white marker, rotating the product on a rotating stand.
Engraving: Several carvers are involved in creating the pattern on each product. Different abrasive discs are used for lines of different thickness, with each master working with one of them. The engravers pass the product to each other: the first applies the largest elements of the drawing, the second – the smaller ones, etc. To prevent the spreading of glass dust, the object is constantly doused with water.
Acid treatment: When the basic model is ready, the Czech crystal glass is treated with a mixture of hydrofluoric and sulfuric acid. This gives the characteristic shine and smooths out sharp edges. Then, if the design requires it, small strokes are added and those fragments of the engraving that should remain matte are added.
Stained glass (optional): Initially, a layer of gold paint (always used in painting, alone or together with other paints) is applied to the surface of the product, white elements are added to it, then other colors. When the drawing is ready, the product is sent to the furnace to melt the paints into the crystal.
Packaging: The authenticity of Bohemian crystal from the Czech Republic is confirmed by a sticker with the logo of the factory where it was produced. The products are issued a certificate of origin. For safe transportation, the crystal is packed in bubble wrap and paper, and the box is filled with sawdust.
What is the feeling like when serving and consuming exquisite drinks in Bohemian crystal glasses?
Serving and consuming exquisite drinks in Czech Bohemian crystal glass is an experience that becomes a true delight for the senses. These exquisite products, crafted with exceptional attention to detail and long-standing traditions, add a unique experience to every gathering, every toast and every sip.
The first impression that Bohemian glasses leave is visual admiration. The crystal from which they are made has a special shine and transparency that cannot be compared to ordinary glass. In the light, Bohemian glasses reveal an ethereal play of reflections and light refraction, and the delicate engravings and facets complement the feeling of elegance and style.
This visual superiority not only emphasizes the beauty of the glassware itself, but also contributes to the presentation of the drink – wine appears more intense and rich in color, whiskey seems to be enfold in a soft, golden halo, and champagne shines with lively foam and bubbles. The crystal glass literally enhance the drink in its elegance, turning every sip into a solemn ceremony.
Another important aspect of Bohemian crystal made in the Czech Republic is the sound – the gentle ringing that is heard with every toast. It is pure, crystalline and melodic, creating a festive atmosphere and a feeling of a special event. This ringing seems to accentuate the moment, turning it into a memory that is imprinted in the mind for a long time. It brings a feeling of finesse and lightness that ordinary glasses can hardly offer.
In addition to visual and acoustic pleasure, crystal dishes – glasses, carafes and decanters – also influence the sensory perception of the drink itself. The weight and shape of the glass contribute to the way the liquid touches the lips and how the taste is perceived.
The finely polished edges and balanced weight of Bohemian glasses create a sense of luxury and comfort, while allowing the drink to reveal its full bouquet of aromatic nuances. Especially with wine and whiskey, the shape and thickness of the glass have a direct impact on the air and temperature, which contributes to achieving a richer and more intense taste.
Czech crystal Bohemia decanters and water bottles also have their own unique role – they do not just serve, but turn every refill of the drink into a ritual. Their transparency and play of light make even the most ordinary water or juice look extremely attractive, and in the case of wine, decanting in a beautifully shaped glassware enhances the process of aeration and release of aromas.
In fact, the use of Czech crystal turns sipping fine drinks into a feast for the senses and soul. These crystal glasses do not just fulfill their function, but create a refined atmosphere, enriching every moment with elegance and harmony. The feeling of serving and consuming drinks in our glasses remains deep in the mind, carrying with it the spirit of tradition, craftsmanship and beauty.
Why choose Bohemian crystal?
Czech crystal glassware has become a symbol of elegance and quality, with a history that dates back to the 13th century in the regions of Bohemia and Silesia, now part of the Czech Republic. This material, although technically a type of lead glass, is called crystal because of its exceptional purity and brilliance, often compared to that of diamonds.
A distinctive feature of Bohemian crystal is the high content of lead oxide – usually 24% or more, which gives the products their characteristic ringing, transparency and ability to refract light, creating multi-colored reflections. Handcrafting is another key feature – craftsmen use traditional techniques such as blowing, engraving and polishing, often combined with modern design approaches.
In the past, these products were a privilege of royal courts and the aristocracy, and today they are valued for their aesthetics and precise handcrafting. In addition to traditional lead crystal, modern manufacturers also offer ecological lead-free crystal, which retains high brilliance and purity, but is safer for the environment. This adaptation reflects the aspiration of Bohemian glassware manufacturers in the Czech Republic to combine tradition and innovation.
